Palliative Care and Hospice. What’s the difference?
When caring for a loved one facing a serious or advanced illness, hospice or palliative care often comes up. Family discussions about pain management and end-of-life care have become more common as we think more deeply about medical wishes. As family members, we want the best for our loved ones, and choosing the right care can make a significant difference. That’s why it’s so important to understand the difference between palliative and hospice care and know which one aligns with your loved one’s preferences.
The objective of both palliative and hospice care is to improve a patient’s quality of life by offering comfort, dignity, respect, and much-needed support to loved ones. While there are many misconceptions, neither palliative nor hospice care necessarily prolongs life, nor do they hasten death.
So, what is the difference between the two?
Palliative care
- This is for patients with a chronic or serious illness that is not yet life-limiting and may still be undergoing curative treatments.
- Addresses distressing symptoms of a chronic or serious illness. Focuses on improving a patient’s quality of life and alleviating the symptoms associated with their illness.
- Can be provided wherever a patient calls home, in the hospital, or at a skilled nursing center.
- May offers care coordination.
Hospice care
- For patients who have a life expectancy of 6 months or less, if their disease takes its natural course.
- Offered to patients who are no longer seeking curative treatment.
- Focuses on providing comfort by addressing distressing symptoms while easing pain and suffering.
- Can be provided at home, in the hospital, in an assisted living community, or a nursing home.
