Creative Arts Therapy

Music and Art Therapy offer hospice patients comfort, reduce anxiety, provide an outlet for expression and create meaningful moments. These therapies are personalized to each patient and enhance their quality of life.

The comfort of art and music

MJHS is proud to offer our life-changing creative arts therapy program, which focuses on using art and music therapy to improve patient relaxation and comfort. Hearing a favorite song can do wonders. Sometimes, patients who haven’t spoken in weeks or months will suddenly sing along, renewing emotional connections with family and creating strong bonds between the patient, their families and the care team.

We also use art therapy with our pediatric patients, and often the young children of patients, to help them express their feelings during this very difficult time.

Some Core Elements of the Creative Arts Therapy Program include:

  • An opportunity to honor the rituals, traditions, and holidays observed by families in a culturally sensitive manner while providing emotional support to anyone who has experienced past suffering related to trauma or loss, such as Holocaust survivors and veterans.
  • Legacy projects, designed by the patient and their family, create shared moments and capture memories through voice recordings, handprints and other creative projects.
  • Music therapy sessions offered to the whole family at home enhance communication and create moments of joy.
  • Art therapy provides a creative outlet for expressing emotions, helping children navigate the grieving process and developing coping skills.

Music Therapy has also been shown to significantly improve the lives of patients with dementia and their families. It fosters moments of connection, sparks memories, and promotes emotional well-being. These creative therapies provide comfort and help enhance the quality of life, offering a unique way to engage and communicate.
