Helping Your Loved One Sit at the Edge of the Bed
Helping your loved one sit at the edge of the bed is a small action that supports many things — comfort, mealtimes and getting ready to stand. It is also often the first step in a larger transition, such as moving to a wheelchair. Moving slowly and using steady, gentle motions helps both of you feel more at ease.
This article is Part 3 of our Safe Movement at Home series. If you find yourself often using this movement before a transfer, you may also want to read Part 2: Helping with a Bed-to-Wheelchair Transfer.
Before You Begin
- Adjust the bed height so you are not bending or reaching too far. This protects your back.
- Lower the head of the bed if needed, so your loved one is lying flatter.
- Let them know what you are about to do.
Step by Step
- Help your loved one roll onto their side facing you. Gently guide their shoulder and hip together while bending their knees slightly.
- Place one arm behind their shoulders and the other under their knees.
- In one smooth motion, guide their upper body upward while helping their legs swing over the side of the bed.
- Keep their body close to yours so you can give better support. Try not to pull only with your arms — use your legs and body to assist the movement.
- Once they are seated, pause for a moment. Some people feel lightheaded at first, so stay nearby and offer reassurance.
- Make sure their feet are supported on the floor or a footstool, and encourage a relaxed, upright posture.
If your loved one feels dizzy
Feeling lightheaded when first sitting up is common, especially if your loved one has been lying down for a while. Stay close, offer reassurance and give them a few moments before moving further. If dizziness does not pass or if they feel faint, help them lie back down and call us.
In the next article, we walk through how to reposition your loved one for comfort and to help protect their skin.
